Mumbai University is one of the first three state universities in India. The University of Mumbai was established in 1857 by Dr John Wilson. Earlier it was known as the University of Bombai. But when the city name change from ‘Bombai’ to ‘Mumbai’, the name of the University also has been changed from “University of Bombay” to “University of Mumbai”. It is abbreviated as either “MU” (for Mumbai University) or “UoM” (for University of Mumbai).

It also awarded A grade in 2012 by NAAC for its overall performance. The UGC also accorded Mumbai University with the status of “University with Potential for Excellence.
