What all you know about MAT?
MAT (Management Aptitude Test) is a national level entrance examination held for admissions to MBA/PGDM programs in the top B- schools of India. The test is conducted four times a year in the month of February, May, September and December. The exam is conducted in online as well as in offline mode separately, generally there is a difference of a week between the two, and candidates can choose any mode out of the two. MAT result is usually declared within a month after the conduction of the exam, and candidates must score 95+ percentile to get admission to top B- schools.
MAT is an objective type test which consists of 200 Multiple Choice Questions which includes 5 sections i.e. Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, and Indian & Global Environment. The duration of MAT is 2 hours 30 minutes, and candidates are awarded +1 for the correct answer and also there is a deduction of .25 marks for every wrong attempt.
Does MAT have sectional cut- off?
MAT comprises 5 sections, but MAT does not have any sectional cutoff of its own, but overall cut off is declared in MAT Result. It is not essential because AIMA do not declare sectional cut off on the official website, but in order to get a call from a specific MBA college, the college might have some sectional cutoff as their criteria to select a candidate.
What is a good MAT score to get top MBA colleges?
Candidates are selected not only on the basis of Round 1 MAT Result but also on the basis of written exam (depends on the college selection criteria), and Group Discussion & Personal Interview which is conducted by the college separately. Cut off marks (the minimum marks required to be eligible) are between 500- 600, but to get admission in top MBA college like MDI, candidates must score more than 700, which is a good score.
What’s next after clearing MAT?
MAT Result will be valid for 1 year. MAT scorecard will also be sent to every participant’s respective address. After the declaration of MAT Result, colleges accepting MAT score will call all the shortlisted aspirants (after round 1) for Written Ability Test (WAT) which can include essay writing or any test, which will be followed by a Group Discussion/ Personal Interview round.
If a candidate will get admission in top MBA college after clearing MAT then he/ she can seek admission into management courses in Finance, HR, Marketing, Operations and International Business. Also, any B-School which comes under MAT, whether National or International – can consider MAT Score as an admission input based on the MAT score card.

If one fails to clear MAT cut off then don’t worry because MAT examination is conducted four times a year, so prepare well.
