Savitribai Phule Pune University was established on 10th February, 1949 under the Poona University Act. Pune University (earlier name) was renamed as Savitribai Phule Pune University on 9 November 2014 in the honor of Savitribai Phule who was an Indian social reformer during the period of British rule. Since its establishment, the University of Pune has played a key role in providing quality education to the studnts. The University also offers separate hostel facilities to both boys and girls. But the hostel has very limited numbers of seats and are granted to the students strictly on the basis of merit. Currently it has a capacity of around 700 rooms (from single seated to eight seated), well equipped with all modern facilities.
